Our Mission
The Scarabaeinae Research Network is an international group of dung beetle taxonomists, ecologists and systematists dedicated to developing the informational infrastructure needed to establish scarabaeine dung beetles as a functioning invertebrate focal taxon for biodiversity study and conservation.
Scarabaeine dung beetles have enormous potential as an invertebrate focal taxon. They are supported by widespread research into their ecology and behavior, a large circle of active systematists focused on establishing the species-level taxonomy of the Scarabaeinae, and broad conservation research into their uses as environmental indicators. This project will unite an unprecedented network of taxonomists, ecologists, and conservationists to capitalize on these opportunities to broadly accelerate the pace of scarabaeine research and enhance its usefulness in conservation contexts.
Through annual meetings, electronic communication and databasing tools, we:
-
1.Synthesize Scarabaeinae taxonomic and identification resources
2. Standardize methods for sampling scarabaeine communities worldwide.
3. Develop priorities for scarabaeine research on key conservation issues.
4. Serve as a model for future networks dedicated to developing additional invertebrate focal taxa.
How to Join
Membership in ScarabNet is open to anyone involved in dung beetle research, invertebrate surveys or invertebrate conservation. Of course, our efforts will only succeed to the degree that our membership actually participates, so active members are what we're looking for! Together we are beginning the process of synthesizing the taxonomy and ecology of dung beetles and coordinating collecting methods and research.
How to Contribute
Anyone can contribute:
-
1.checklists or catalogues
-
2.information on species including distribution records, images, and taxonomic information (description, diagnosis, etc.)
-
3.non-copyrighted, copyright-waived or copyright-expired articles in pdf format
-
4.descriptions of collecting protocols or sampling data for evaluating our protocols
5. datasets from specific localities
Other ways to contribute and opportunities for collaborative projects among network members will emerge as we proceed.
